Changing this also sets the "Population Multiplier" in Advanced Zombie Options.

Zombies

How zombies are distributed across the map.

Distribution

Controls whether some randomization is applied to zombie distribution.

ZombieVoronoiNoise

How frequently new zombies are added to the world.

ZombieRespawn

Zombie allowed to migrate to empty cells.

ZombieMigrate

Set by the "Zombie Count" population option, or by a custom number here. Insane = 2.5, Very High = 1.6, High = 1.2, Normal = 0.65, Low = 0.15, None = 0.0.

ZombieConfig.PopulationMultiplier
0 to 4 · default 0.65

A multiplier for the desired zombie population at the start of the game. Insane = 3.0, Very High = 2.0, High = 1.5, Normal = 1.0, Low = 0.5, None = 0.0.

ZombieConfig.PopulationStartMultiplier
0 to 4 · default 1

A multiplier for the desired zombie population on the peak day. Insane = 3.0, Very High = 2.0, High = 1.5, Normal = 1.0, Low = 0.5, None = 0.0.

ZombieConfig.PopulationPeakMultiplier
0 to 4 · default 1.5

The day when the population reaches its peak.

ZombieConfig.PopulationPeakDay
1 to 365 · default 28

The number of hours that must pass before zombies may respawn in a cell. If 0, spawning is disabled.

ZombieConfig.RespawnHours
0 to 8760 · default 0

The number of hours that a chunk must be unseen before zombies may respawn in it.

ZombieConfig.RespawnUnseenHours
0 to 8760 · default 0

The fraction of a cell's desired population that may respawn every RespawnHours.

ZombieConfig.RespawnMultiplier
0 to 1 · default 0

The number of hours that must pass before zombies migrate to empty parts of the same cell. If 0, migration is disabled.

ZombieConfig.RedistributeHours
0 to 8760 · default 12

The distance a zombie will try to walk towards the last sound it heard.

ZombieConfig.FollowSoundDistance
10 to 1000 · default 100

The size of groups real zombies form when idle. 0 means zombies don't form groups. Groups don't form inside buildings or forest zones.

ZombieConfig.RallyGroupSize
0 to 1000 · default 20

The amount, as a percentage, that zombie groups can vary in size from the default (both larger and smaller). For example, at 50% variance with a default group size of 20, groups will vary in size from 10-30.

ZombieConfig.RallyGroupSizeVariance
0 to 100 · default 50

The distance real zombies travel to form groups when idle.

ZombieConfig.RallyTravelDistance
5 to 50 · default 20

The distance between zombie groups.

ZombieConfig.RallyGroupSeparation
5 to 25 · default 15

How close members of a zombie group stay to the group's "leader".

ZombieConfig.RallyGroupRadius
1 to 10 · default 3

Controls the maximum number of zombies tracked before cleanup occurs. 0 means zombies will not be cleaned up. The default value (300) is strongly recommended. Increasing this value or setting to 0 may cause severe performance problems. For troubleshooting and bug-report purposes, please reproduce any issue with the default setting before submitting a report.

ZombieConfig.ZombiesCountBeforeDelete
0 to 5000 · default 300

How to use the file on a dedicated server

Stop the server first, because it can rewrite its settings on shutdown. Put the downloaded file in the Server folder of the Zomboid data directory, replacing the old one, and start the server again. The name has to match the server: servertest_SandboxVars.lua by default, or <name>_SandboxVars.lua if you launch with -servername.

Most settings apply on the next start. A few only matter when the world creates something, such as the start date, the first zombie population and loot in rooms players have already opened. Set those before the first start of a new world, and keep a backup of the world and the old file before a big balance change.

Need the whole setup first? Read the Build 42 server guide or the ports and connection guide.

Run it on a managed Project Zomboid server

GHosting installs the current Build 42 server, opens all its ports, and gives you Workshop mods, a live console and full file access. Upload this file to data/Server/gh_SandboxVars.lua in the Files tab and restart.

SandboxVars.lua questions

Where does SandboxVars.lua go on a dedicated server?

In the Server folder of the Zomboid data directory, named after the server: servertest_SandboxVars.lua for the default server name. On Linux that is usually ~/Zomboid/Server/, and on Windows C:\Users\<you>\Zomboid\Server\. On a GHosting server it is data/Server/gh_SandboxVars.lua in the Files tab.

Do changes apply to an existing world?

Stop the server, replace the file, and start it again. Most settings take effect on that start. Some only shape what the world creates, such as the start date, zombies that have already spawned, and loot in places players have already opened, so set those before the first start of a new world.

Will this remove my mod settings?

No. Mods add their own tables to SandboxVars.lua. When you paste a file, anything this tool does not know is kept and written back unchanged, with a note telling you how many settings were kept.

Does it work with Build 41 files?

It targets Build 42, which is now the stable branch. A Build 41 file loads, and every setting that still exists is kept, but Build 41 worlds do not carry over to Build 42 and several options changed meaning. Start a new world with a Build 42 file.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Reading, editing and writing the file all happen in your browser. Your settings only leave the page if you copy a share link, which stores the changed settings in the link itself.
