Free Minecraft Server Trial: Paper, Java or Bedrock

The hardest part of buying Minecraft hosting is often deciding what kind of server you need. Paper is usually the best Java choice for performance and plugins, official Java Vanilla keeps behavior closest to Mojang's server, and Bedrock serves a different client ecosystem entirely. GHosting's free 48-hour Minecraft server trial lets you make that decision on a real server before paying. It needs no payment card, has no subscription and never renews automatically.

What the free Minecraft trial includes

The trial provisions the same isolated container and dashboard as a paid plan. It uses the 4 GB Creeper plan and includes:

  • 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPU and 25 GB NVMe storage.
  • Your choice of Paper, official Java Vanilla or the official Bedrock Dedicated Server.
  • A public game address with the correct TCP or UDP path for the chosen edition.
  • A writable console, live logs, managed settings, browser file access and SFTP.
  • Clean save-before-stop restarts and an optional daily restart.
  • A choice of Europe or North America, subject to available trial capacity.

Which Minecraft version does the trial run?

As checked on August 23, 2026, Mojang's official stable Java manifest reports Minecraft Java 26.2, released on June 16, and Paper's official feed also targets Paper 26.2. The Bedrock variant resolves the current stable Linux Dedicated Server package from Minecraft's first-party download service. You can verify the current upstream releases in Mojang's Java 26.2 notes, the Paper download feed and the official Bedrock server download.

GHosting follows those stable feeds instead of pinning an old marketing-page version. The dashboard shows the installed and latest managed version. Updates are deliberate: you choose when to run one, and the server keeps worlds, plugins, datapacks and settings outside the replaceable runtime.

Paper, Java Vanilla or Bedrock?

Choose Paper for most Java groups

Paper uses the Java Edition protocol and can load Bukkit-compatible plugins. It is the practical default when you want moderation tools, homes, permissions, performance tuning or other server-side features without making every player install a mod loader. The trial is enough time to upload a small representative plugin set, restart, join and check the console for compatibility warnings.

Paper can change edge-case technical behavior in exchange for performance and plugin hooks. Redstone engineers and technical players should test their important farms rather than assuming a Vanilla design behaves identically. Our Paper versus Vanilla guide goes deeper into that tradeoff.

Choose Java Vanilla for the official baseline

Java Vanilla is Mojang's unmodified server JAR. It accepts Java Edition players on Windows, macOS and Linux, supports datapacks, and is the cleanest reference when exact Vanilla behavior matters more than plugins. It is also useful for testing whether a problem belongs to a plugin stack or to the world itself.

Choose Bedrock for Bedrock Edition clients

Bedrock Dedicated Server uses its own UDP protocol and world format. Choose it for Bedrock Edition clients rather than expecting Java and Bedrock players to mix on the same official server. Console platforms can impose their own custom-server discovery restrictions, so test the actual devices your group uses during the 48 hours. A Java world is not directly interchangeable with a Bedrock world without a separate conversion tool, which is why the edition choice should come before the group builds anything important.

Settings worth testing

Java and Paper trials expose the message of the day, player limit, difficulty, default game mode, view distance, simulation distance, PvP, flight allowance, spawn protection and daily restart. Bedrock exposes the matching Bedrock-safe set, including tick distance and cheats.

  • View and simulation distance. These affect memory and CPU much more than the slot count. Keep them realistic for a 4 GB plan.
  • Online authentication. Java online mode and Bedrock online mode stay enabled, so player identities are verified rather than trusted from a name.
  • Graceful stops. The managed service writes the stop command and waits before terminating, which protects the world from an abrupt power-off style shutdown.
  • Console access. Try list, operator commands and a clean restart while the world is still disposable enough to experiment with.

Upload a world, plugin or datapack

The Files tab and SFTP expose the persistent data directory. Paper keeps plugins in plugins/; Java worlds keep datapacks below the world's datapacks/ directory; Bedrock keeps worlds, behavior packs and resource packs in its own data tree. Stop the server before replacing a live world, keep the original copy locally, and watch the next startup log for format or version warnings.

A 4 GB trial is intended for a small group, a new world or a modest plugin set. It is not a fair benchmark for a huge pre-generated map, dozens of plugins or players flying in different directions. The Minecraft RAM guide explains when the 6 GB or 8 GB paid plans make more sense.

No card and no surprise charge

Starting the trial never opens Stripe Checkout. After 48 hours the server stops and nothing is charged. Its files are retained for three days, giving you time to continue from the dashboard or download the world before it is removed.

Can I keep the same Minecraft world?

Yes. Choose a paid term during the retention window and the same container resumes. The world, plugins or packs, settings, files and public address remain in place. You do not need to migrate the group onto a second server after proving the first one works.

How to start the Minecraft trial

  1. Open the Minecraft server hosting page.
  2. Choose a region and select Start free trial.
  3. Create an account and verify your email address.
  4. Return to the hosting page, start the trial, then choose Paper, Java Vanilla or Bedrock when adding the server.

Each verified account can claim one trial per eligible game. A rolling network allowance, a global slot limit and a paying-customer capacity reserve keep the free servers available for genuine groups.
